Some research showed that thank you notes were considered a polite way of acknowledging gifts, and so here is the note she writes and delivers sometime after Christmas, and before the New Year: ]

Kay - I wanted to thank you for the gift you gave me this past holiday. It was a kind gesture, and is appreciated. I apologize for not being prepared. How has training with your crows gone?

Hey, Annie, Merry Christmas. And, that's OK. I'm just glad to have become friends with you this year.

Training's been good. The crows are eager to learn new things so this is just another game for them. Of course, some don't take it seriously at all, but I'm working on it!

[ Kay she still doesn't think you really grasp what being friends with her can mean but she's not arguing that point; it's never been a wise way to spend her time. ]

You know their personalities best. Not every one of them will be meant for work like this. I'd guess they're similar to people... with their own strengths and weaknesses.

You're right. I understand that not all of them are game for this, but many are. Some are just happy making friends with humans.
